5 Ways to Set and Reach Your 2022 Reading Goals

Hello 2022! It's January and now that we've finally got all those Christmas decorations stashed back in the attic it's time to think about setting READING GOALS for the year. If I have learned one thing, it is that if you don't set goals, you won't ever reach a goal.

Several years ago, when my kids were young, I actually worked as a book reviewer. My job was literally to read and write reviews of the books I had read for reviewing sites. During those years, I didn't have to set a crazy goal for reading over 100 books; it was easy to do. Now, however, with our busy, hectic schedules I have had to set goals for myself including in the area of reading.

Off and on throughout my adult life, I have kept lists of the books I've read throughout the year. I do love lists. And even more I love checking off my lists and seeing what I have accomplished. It's the same with reading books. At the end of the year, I look back at all the books I've read and assess how I did. 2020 was a terrible year for reading for me. So, last year I decided I needed to up my game again. Did you set any goals for reading last year? How did you do?

I ended up reading 58 books in 2021. I have to say, I am proud of that number because honestly it was a crazy, difficult year for me. What really saved me last year was audio books. I love audio books! Don't let anyone tell you that listening to an audio book is not reading. It is totally reading! If you want to increase the number of books you are reading each month, I advise adding some audio books to your list. And the best part is that you can probably find what you want using your library app. That way you don't have to get an expensive book subscription or anything like that. Just see what your library has to offer.

Now that I've looked over my reading from last year, it's time to do some assessment. 58 books is a good result for me. I will probably shoot for 50 books again next year and see if I hit 60. What kind of reading did I do this year?

Here are the stats:

  • 8 non-fiction
  • 50 Fiction
    • 6 historical
    • 7 children's fiction
    • 2 YA
    • 4 classics
    • 31 mysteries (This was definitely the year of the mystery!)

So, how can we all be more successful at Setting and Reaching our reading goals?

1. Set reasonable goals with a challenge. Estimate how many books you read the year before and add a few more. So if you read 20 books last year, make it 25 this year or 30. But if you set your goal at 50, there is a chance you might not make the goal. However, if you really want to challenge yourself and you are up for the challenge, then I say GO FOR IT!

2. Once you figure out your yearly goal then figure out a reasonable monthly goal. If your goal is 30 books this year then you should aim for 2-3 books a month.

3. Select some books that you would like to read this year. Maybe you'd always wanted to read the entire Anne of Green Gables series or the Lord of the Rings trilogy--add them to your TBR (to be read) list.

4. Most of us have no problem in figuring out what to read. It is finding the time to actually read and make those goals. To reach your goal, you need to make reading a habit. Pick a time of day to read everyday. For me, I get most of my reading done before bed. Every night before bed, I finally have time to myself and I spend that time reading. It also helps me relax and be able to fall asleep more easily too. Its a win-win!

5. Keep track of your reading. If you don't write it down, the odds are that you will not know what you've read this year by the time December comes along. There are many ways to keep track of your reading, but the easiest way for me is to keep a list in my Notes app on my phone. I make a new Note each year and title it "2022 Reading List," changing the year each year, of course. You can even insert a check mark by each read book if you choose to.

The point is to be INTENTIONAL! Be actively working toward a goal each month and you will more than likely reach it. Good luck, my friends! And Happy Reading!!

Monthly Reading

I've come to the conclusion that I love lists. Reading Books, To Do, Favorite Restaurants... (Of course when my To Do Lists are only mental lists in my head, the items usually don't get done. I have to make an actual list whether on paper or digital. Are you like that too? Tell me it's not just me!)

Over the years, I have kept different lists of books that I've read. I'd make yearly reading goals for myself too. When I was a book reviewer, I'd make a goal of something like 50 to 100 books a year. It was amazing all the books I was reading back then. In recent years as my schedule has gone from busy to crazy/insane, my reading has declined greatly.

So after our family took a trip through the midwest and I visited the Laura Ingalls Wilder homestead in De Smet, South Dakota, I decided to re-read the Little House series and a couple biographies I had about her. And I started to begin again making reading lists. That started in June 2017. Making the lists encourages me to make sure I am reading something everyday and making progress to add books to each month's list.  I'd love to hear what you all are reading too.

Stay Tuned!

Book Review: Now & Forever by Mary Connealy

So, I was accepted into Bethany House's reviewer program which was thrilling!! And the first book I received was the 2nd book in the Wild at Heart series by Mary Connealy. The postman dropped off  the package and my heart beat excitedly in my chest. I ripped it open and found this book just waiting for me to read, but being the busy mommy, wife, teacher, author that I am, it has taken me much longer to read this book than I would have liked.  It had nothing to do with the book and everything to do with finding time to read the book.

I love Mary Connealy’s books and this one did not disappoint!

Not having read book 1, at the onset there was some confusion on who all the characters were and how they were related, but once you get into the first chapter or so the book really is stand-alone. The author capably explains the necessary plot ideas that you might have missed from book 1.

In Now and Forever, we meet Matt Tucker (wild man/mountain man) and Shannon Wilde (pretending to be a man since the Civil War and trying to forget that same war too) who end up going through an adventure together and surviving only to be forced into a marriage of convenience due to propriety.

This is one of those books that you just tuck into, rest back into your pillow and enjoy every moment. Mary's writing style is so easy to get drawn into and before you know it several chapters have gone by. There's just something so genuine in the way the author creates her characters and as they reach their epiphany of life and love it touches your heart in a real way and the words flow over your soul and comfort you.

Matt Tucker for instance is a hero to fall in love with and not just because he's handsome and able to fight and protect Shannon but he also has a heart for God. And he says things like this after Shannon finally divulges something personal and hurtful from her past: “”If I’m strong enough to listen, then for certain God is.”

Memorable characters, terrific writing and the plotting and pacing are perfect. I definitely plan to get the other books in the series. Go out and get this one but maybe start with book 1 in the series. Ava liable at all book outlets such as Amazon.

I received a free copy of the book from Bethany House publishers for an honest review.

Have You Been Reading This Summer?

Friends of mine have asked if I've been getting any reading this summer. My initial reaction was NO! It has been a crazy, busy summer. I can't believe it's almost over and we start schooling again next week. But then I remembered I had been reading!

This summer I've been 're-reading' all of the Jane Austen novels by listening to audio books using the Librivox app on my phone as I drive or clean house. I decided to read them in backwards publication order. Started with Persuasion, (my fav) then did Northanger Abbey and just finished Emma the other day. Now it's on to Mansfield Park. The best part is that it's FREE! So there is no reason to be too busy to read these days.

Reading Old Favorites on my B-day Weekend

I'm sitting on my bed with a stack of books. All of them YA. It's my birthday weekend and I plan to read as much of them as I can. Among them I have Melody Carlson, Kristin Billerbeck and yes, Meg Cabot (and it's not just because Royal Wedding is coming out this summer!). Do you find yourself re-reading old favorites. I do! I do it all the time. And sometimes I feel guilty about that as there are so many good books out there that I have yet to read. But how can I not revisit these special friends like Elizabeth Bennet and even Princess Mia? So I say, go forth and read: read new books, favorite books and even something outside your usual reading genre. There is nothing better than being submerged in a good book. That's how I'll be spending my birthday--well, between eating good food and birthday cake, of course.

Andrea & the Five Day Challenge

Shoot! He’d heard everything. Everything—including the part where I’d contemplated asking him out. I could never talk to him ever again. It was over. Humiliation snaked down my back. I felt completely nauseous with my stomach churning my frustration over and over. Good thing I was already in the restroom. Well, I would just have to hide out for now because no way could I face Luke. EVER!
Even if that meant I had to miss English, even if it meant I flunked The Scarlet Letter test, even if I got detention for ditching class—it would be worth it.
Of course, Mom would never understand why I got detention for hiding out in the bathroom, or the F, for that matter. She’d want to know the whole embarrassing story, and I’d dealt with enough mortification for one day, thank you very much.
I cracked the bathroom door open and peeked out into the hallway. No sign of Luke. Uh, I’m such an idiot. He heard and he doesn’t care what I said. Either that or he was avoiding me as if I were Chuck Willis, who wears socks with his sandals.

Coming March 6th!

Fiction Fridays Blog Hop 2/13

Here is a piece from my upcoming YA Christian novel, Andrea & the Five Day Challenge.

Before she had a chance to answer, I heard my name called out. I pivoted, but I was totally unprepared to see Luke coming right up beside me. My face grew warm again. Oh, please, if only my skin wouldn’t turn all blotchy like it usually did when I blushed. “Uh, hi Luke.” I couldn’t say any more. If I opened my mouth, it would come out in gibberish, I was sure. Lord God in Heaven, if You’re listening, and I know You always are, please, please, don’t let him have overheard what we were talking about. When was that spaceship getting here, anyway? I’d settle for an invisibility cloak, too, just as long as I could disappear.
“Hi.” Luke smiled.
Why now did his smile make my heart do cartwheels? I’d seen him smile dozens of times, maybe even a hundred, and my heart had never done that before. OK, that’s not completely true. There have been a couple occasions when my pulse tripped upwards, but I just needed some more vitamins or something.
“I was wondering if we could go over that new proof from yesterday. I’m not sure I have it yet.”
Geometry? He wanted to talk about Geometry.
My heart fell. I don’t know why I thought it would be anything else. I mentally slapped myself in the head. Of course. He just wanted to talk about Geometry. The quiz today.
“Well, I gotta go,” announced Amy with a conspiratorial smile as she adjusted her glasses and walked off.
I turned to Luke. “You know, Geometry isn’t my strong subject.”
“I know.” He knew? His answer surprised me.
I stood staring at him for a second. His brown eyes looked a little sparkly as he grinned at me. I must have been seeing things. Yeah, I definitely needed some extra vitamin A.
“If I had to guess, I’d say history is your best subject.” Luke still smiled, in fact, I think it grew.
How did he know my favorite subject? “Uh, yeah, it is. How…”
He raised his expansive shoulders slightly. “I can tell by the way you speak up in class.”
Class. Oh, yes, because we also had U. S. History together. I wanted to run away, but I couldn’t. I wasn’t that much of a coward. I could stand here and look into his eyes…no, I couldn’t. They were somehow more fascinating than ever. I lifted my view to the doorway. “You know, I need to get to my locker and pick up my books for next period.”
“OK, me, too.”
So, I’m walking with Luke Ryan. He is suddenly very interesting to me and seems to know more about me than I do about him. Something is definitely wrong with this picture. Had I somehow walked through Alice’s looking glass without noticing, because this was unquestionably a wonderland.

October Reads

I'm so happy Marie Higgins author day went well on the blog here last week. Thanks Marie for being here and thanks to all you who came by and even commented. It's was a good week.

Thought I'd go ahead and post last months reading. I read a lot of YA this month as I've been writing and editing YA lately.

******

Enthusiasm by Polly Schulman--YA. I love this book. I think I've read it every year since I bought it. Great writing, good insight into the teen age mind and she created a terrific hero too. Just charming.

Princess in Pink & Princess in Training by Meg Cabot--YA. What can I say. I love these books.

I Do, Don't I? adapted by Catherine Clark--YA. This is one of the tie in novels for the tv show Gilmore Girls. It comes from the point of view of Rory from 2nd year of the show. They are not original stories but adaptations from the show. Even still, they are fun to read.

His Forever by Missy Tippens--Contemporary Inspirational. I got this at the library. It had a slow start and the charcters seemed a little cardboardy at first but they got better and I kept reading. I really enjoyed it.

A Christmas Gift by Diane Craver--YA Holiday Historical. I lucked out in receiving an advance reader copy of this book. I'll be posting more of a review later this month. It's a good little story. The book releases November 15th with Whimsical Publications. Wonderful holiday reading.

Faith by Merry K. Stahel--Inspirational Contemporary. Another terrific Inspirational read from White Rose Publishing.

September Reads

It seems unreal that another month has past and we are into October already. Before you know it,  Christmas will be here! I didn't get a whole lot of reading done this past month. With school back in session, I didn't do much writing either. I did spend time editing my mystery and my reading reflects that.

The Secret of the Old Clock by Carolyn Keene
Yep, this is the first Nancy Drew book written back in the '50's. It's been so long since I read one of these; I thought it would be fun to revisit one of my favorite series.

Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare
This is the title I read on my PDA late at night. I've always loved this story but this is first time I've actually read the play.

Dead Girls don't wear Diamonds by Nancy Martin
This is book two in Martin's Blackbird Sisters Mysteries. I liked it alot. Better than the first one. Cute writing and a more interesting plot.

What are YOU Reading?

What are you reading right now? Really, I want to know.

As an author, I'm asked that question all the time; and for me, it is rather a tricky one to answer because I am always reading several titles at once.

#1 I try to read a couple Jane Austen titles every year. At the moment, I'm slowly reading through Pride and Prejudice--savoring every word. ;) I read it at night on my PDA when I have a chance.

#2 I'm reading The Magician's Nephew (part of the Chronicles of Narnia) and A Christmas Carol to my two boys.

#3 The Commander's Desire by Jeannette Green--a medieval romance. Very good.

#4 Love Finds You in Snowball, Arkansas. It reads like a chicklit but it's a Contemporary Inspirational. Loving it.

#5 Dreaming in Black and White by Laura Jensen Walker. Christian chicklit. This one is laugh-out-loud funny.

Okay so there is my list. I'd love to hear what everyone else is reading.
